Underrepresentation?
posted by FlamingMetroidzd at
CaptainDurangis made note of a little problem with Super Smash Bros. Brawl up until now--the problem being for us in particular. What might be any problem, you ask? Where is all the Metroid? So far, we have Samus as a character, a song, a Metroid assist trophy, and a stage for Norfair (info here). Seems like there should be a little more so such an old and well known series. He explains in one of his posts:
I'm still waiting for ANY playable Metroid characters. And no...Zero Suit Samus does not count as an extra character even if she's separate...it's still Samus. Ridley in one of his forms? Dark Samus? Something else? Come on...we need some representation here...this being one of Nintendo's top franchises.

Some more Metroid-themed ATs would be nice too. We know we've got a Metroid...what about Ninja Space Pirate, Etecoons and Dachoras, or a boss character? Actually, now that I think about it, an X Parasite AT could be pretty cool...it comes out and makes a bunch of copies of a character.

I don't really care. Metroid is just too under-represented.
My own opinions? I think it is still too early to be demanding much... though that stage or assist trophy up on the website would be some good coverage. I'm half expecting to see Dark Samus as a character in the end, what with all the attention she's been getting for the past two Metroid titles.

Headshot-Jackal the Reviewer
posted by FlamingMetroidzd at
I probably should have given Headshot props a long time ago at the birth of the ND, but here it is now. I don't know how many of you read the gaming analysis section of the forums, but this particular user has contributed more than half of all the reviews. Not just average reviews, but full-length, quality reviews. Quite the job for not getting paid!

Read them up and give some encouragement and feedback. If you want, send via contact and it'll be forwarded (yeah right, no one uses the contact page heh).

Just because of these reviews, it might be worth it to invest in an RSS of the latest and best reviews within the analysis. What do you think?

Left Out Once Again
posted by FlamingMetroidzd at
I feel exactly like I did back a few years when I found out about Metroid and totally missed the good old Super Metroid days.

Was watching Heroes one day, and after it ended, I kept watching a bit... Ok, I kept watching a long ways afterwards. Then another show came on that I've been referred to before, but never mustered the anti-lazy to watch. Show was House M.D. Yeah, you're probably thinking who on Earth I could possibly miss something such as this. I miss stuff easily. I've been catching up though, and they're probably good enough for me to find DVDs. That's saying something, because I rarely get DVDs on anything (only done it one for Avatar season 1).

If you haven't watched it, I insist you do. And when someone insists you watch a show, then they might actually be right that it is one of the best ever. On a side note, anyone know if this is based off of anything in real life?

Metroid 3rd Derivative is Back!
posted by Serris-X at
The title says it all. Everyone's favorite Metroid sprite comic, Metroid Third Derivative (Calculus joke for Metroid 3-Prime) has finally returned! After a long period of inactivity, I just checked back on the site and found that the comic had been updated quite a few times. Granted, the new comics weren't as classically funny as I remember M''' to be, but there were still some good ones, and it's nice to see the comic coming back.

New Metroid Desires
posted by FlamingMetroidzd at
Whether it be that dread message or just the general future of Metroid in general. Lets ask ourselves what we want in the next games to come. Anything come to mind?

Well, I know what comes to mind for quite a few of us at TSC. A game with very large scales... environments of unsurmountable composure! Something you may find interesting is that most of us--maybe like you--aren't looking for innovation. Just the same old greatness of Super Metroid and/or Metroid Prime. Might as well make a combination of those, and we're set. 2.5d, as some might call; Smash Bros. style... Capt. Durangis shows some good reasoning for this:
The amount of space that can be saved by switching to 2D, even 2.5D, should be used for fleshing out the rest of the game to fill it. Unfortunately, most 2D games don't take advantage of this. Indeed, they actually seem to be even less fleshed-out than their full 3D counterparts. A lot of high-poly, high-res 3D games fill up the entire software space, some even taking on multiple discs. Imagine a game with the graphical quality of Super Metroid taking up two discs - how massive would that game be?
But who's to say innovation wouldn't be good? Personally, I'll take anything they throw at me as long as it sticks to the Metroid formula, but I too have a deeper desire for something like Super Metroid on a much grander scale. Whether I really would like it that way or that I just hate being the one to have missed the glory days of Super Metroid (at least I played it), I don't know. At least we can be sure of one thing: Metroid is sticking around. Gearmaster makes a suitable argument for that.
I doubt anyone would let a big moneymaker drop off the charts. Someone, somewhere, and sometime will restore it to whatever glory it is assigned. As for me, I bet nintendo will take it again, after all they ARE a corporation and DO want money.

SSBB RELEASE DATE CONFIRMED!!!...wait...
posted by xXMeteorXx at
Yeah, remember that release date of December 3rd?
Yeah, funny story about that, it's been delayed until February 10th.
I can honestly say I'm not surprised...but I don't really care either. Nintendo and delays seem to go hand and hand. But I'll support it, like Miyamoto said one time: "A Delayed game is eventually good, a bad game, is bad forever."

Yeah, I'm not flipping out, you can thank my hardcore Sony Fanboy classmate for that. He made me realize just how stupid I sound when I talk bad about Nintendo constantly, even when they're good. Just for the record, my opinion of Metroid Prime 3 hasn't changed. But from now on I'll be more supportive of Nintendo, I hope you're happy. =P

Oh right! A link to the source, guess I rambled on about nothing for a bit too long...again. =P

posted by xXMeteorXx at
Oh GOD where do I start?
Well, I suppose I could start with the Wii's Firmware update.
Yes, updated to Version 3.1. Along with the update, you can go into the WiiWare section of the Wii Shop Channel and update your Everybody Votes Channel and Internet Channel. You probably got the message via WiiCOnnect24, so view so what changed there.

As for the press conference? Oh man...I didn't expect a Megaton of information but dear GOD was I wrong! I suggest going to GoNintendo.com and looking back through about 4 pages worth of updates...because there are WAAAY too many links to give. I'll just list the main stuff here:

New Channels/Info:

Check Mii Out

Another PuzzLoop game
Dr. Mario game

Game Updates:
Mario Kart Wii (Peppy: TRY A SOMERSAULT!!)
Super Mario Galaxy

Get a good grip on the Galaxy
posted by xXMeteorXx at
Yes, Nintendo gave a us a WiiConnect24 update concerning another safety precaution with the Wii Remotes. This time a "Wiimote Jacket." Yeah, doesn't look so hot, but at least they're free, as long as you still have your serial number of your Wii. I personally think Nintendo's going a bit overboard with safety of the Wii Remotes, why don't they focus on something like...I dunno a HDD or Demo Channel? Once again, it's free, so I'm not complaining, I MIGHT even end up using it once I receive them...who knows...place your orders now, they ship on Oct. 15th. For more info, Click Here!

In other news, Super Mario Galaxy info and videos are going through the roof! You can even watch the introduction on YouTube if you wish. Yes, in case you're wondering, it does in fact look awesome, especially the-oh right, spoilers...
You can find these anywhere, go to GameTrailers, you'll find like 12 of 'em. I only looked at the Intro, nothing else. I want to feel the magic myself!

And finally, there is a press conference hosted by Nintendo coming up October 10th. Don't keep your hopes up for a Megaton, but keep an eye out just in case, and make sure a Wiimote doesn't fly into it.
